Underwater noise pollution often goes unnoticed due to its imperceptibility to the human ear. The work aims to highlight this overlooked issue by repurposing the symbolic and communal space of a fountain.
The flow and volume of the circulating water is activated by pumps responsive to underwater noise pollution data.

Sonic Currents, a fountain, far removed from its traditional role as a decorative object, becomes an active narrator of environmental disruption. Placed in a central, public setting, it acts as a visual narrator, with its flow and volume responding to underwater noise pollution data. At its essence, it aims to address the invisible yet significant disruptions caused by human maritime activities and their impact on the ocean’s acoustic equilibrium.
Prior research, developed during collaborative residency at Lekart, involved capturing underwater sounds in the River Lek using hydrophones, including those generated by cargo boats, ferries, and above-water train travel.
